When you first retire, you may feel a little lost for the first few days or weeks, but don’t worry, that’s normal. You’ve just stopped a daily routine that you have been doing for decades, so your body and mind will need time to adjust to the fact that you can now sleep in and do whatever you want. So, what is it you want to do? Do you have a list of Honey-dos from your spouse, projects you’ve been putting off, places you’ve wanted to visit, or hobbies you wanted to enjoy? Well, now’s the time to dive in and start marking those things off your list, but be cautious along the way. Remember, you are now on a fixed income, so let’s talk about some things you can do in retirement and still be financially smart.

Travel – make a list of all the places you’ve wanted to visit. Research the destinations peak and lowest tourist times. Book your travel plans in the lowest tourist times to free yourself of the higher prices of travel and larger crowds.
Projects – take your Honey-do list and start mapping out the best way to attack it. Make a list of all the materials needed and research material providers for the best prices. Take courses at the local hardware store and watch YouTube videos to learn new skills, so you can do the work yourself or assist a friend who already knows how to do it.
Hobbies – start doing the hobby that makes you happy frequently. Be bold in trying something new by taking up a new hobby or learning a new language. There are many classes available that will allow you to explore new areas. Many are free, while others are inexpensive. Some are online, while others are in person. You can check your local schools and colleges for their continuing education programs.
Volunteer – reach out to the cause or non-profit that is meaningful to you and see how you can be of service. Be a mentor to those of younger generations around you. You can find programs through local schools, churches, and other organizations.
Faith – take this time to find faith or go deeper into your faith to learn and grow. You can finally attend the meetings, services and small groups that may meet during regular business hours now that you are retired. It has been shown that people who practice faith are more satisfied and content with their life.
Wellness – take care of yourself. Exercise more, now that you have the time. Take up a class or start a workout program at home. Try new and delicious recipes to keep your body and mind healthy. Have a check-up with your doctor, then maintain them over the years ahead.
